Using Mylar in machine embroidery

What is Mylar

Mylar is the trademarked name of a Du Pont product. Mylar is a very strong polyester film that was developed in the 1950s.

It is because of this superior strength, heat resistance, and excellent insulating properties that made  Mylar a popular choice for the making of audio and video tape, batteries and even packing.

Mylar in machine embroidery

This beautiful opalescent film creates a sparkly metallic effect between the stitches .

Our Sweet Pea  ‘Mylar Christmas Bauble’ design has been designed to have deliberately left out spaces between the design stitches to allow the Mylar film to show through.

Most machine embroidery designs are too dense to use Mylar. Normally with machine embroidery  you want the rows of stitching to be close enough together so that you cannot see the fabric underneath.

That is why we have made our ‘Mylar Christmas Bauble’ design with the stitching spaced out like it is. The spaces between the stitching allow the light to reflect off the Mylar behind it and gives the machine embroidery a stunning sparkly effect.

We sell Mylar perfect for machine embroidery.

What colour Mylar is best?

We used “Opal Iridescent” in our ‘Mylar Christmas Bauble’ design.

We chose this because it is almost transparent and  it lets you see the background fabric through it giving the machine embroidery more dimension. The colour of the thread that is used in the machine embroidery is also reflected in the Mylar.

    • Hi Sally thanks for your question
The OPAL and coloured OPAL Mylar is washable.
HOWEVER the solid Mylar colours and metallic colours are NOT washable. thanks

  1. Can you use the mylar for embroidery from the inflated baloons which are advertised as mylar baloons?

  2. Beautiful! Can you tell
Me where I can buy Mylar online? I cannot find it on Amazon like someone suggested. Thanks so much for your help!
